From the beginning of time in Africa, the Guinea Fowl has been used as the inspiration for designs on clothing, vessels and dwellings. The Swahili name for the Guinea Fowl – kanga – has come to refer to the colourful cloth familiar to travellers in east Africa, harking back to the time when these cloths were decorated with the white dots of the Guinea Fowl. Readily adapting to urban life, the Guinea Fowl thrives where other wildlife is threatened with extinction. The feathers of the Guinea Fowl, each one different and unrepeatable in nature, have been the inspiration for this design. The mustardy background symbolises the African earth while the Op Art quality of white dots on a black background recalls elements of native decoration dating to the beginnings of civilisation. This range will serve as a memento of the beauty of this natural resource, living on to spread the spirit of Africa for decades to come.
