This timelessly contemporary combination of contrasting black and white 3-D dots and surfaces is inspired by the abstract patterns of African bead and basket work. The Nguni tribes of southern Africa have from time immemorial conveyed coded messages through the patterns of coloured beads on items of personal adornment. This unspoken language informs the initiate of status, clan and village, and discretely allows maidens to convey secret messages of love to their champions. Reducing the elements of colour to black and white focuses attention on the abstract essence of the design itself, and engages the mind in an elegant optical play of positive and negative. At the same time, the tactile quality of the beady dots recalls the organic origins of the object.
